A great deal of rural Kent has never been connected to mains drainage, so off grid waste water is normal here rather than unusual. We are on these roads every day and we know the access problems that come with farm tracks, narrow lanes and long driveways.

Working in Kent

  • We cover domestic properties, farms, pubs, campsites and commercial premises right across the county.
  • Long hose runs are no problem where a tanker cannot get close to the tank, which is common on older Kent properties.
  • Emergency callouts run 24 hours a day, including weekends and bank holidays.

Chalk, clay and marsh across one county

Kent's ground decides what a tank can do. The chalk of the North Downs and the Lower Greensand hold the county's drinking water, and Ashford Borough Council's guidance on non-mains drainage, written with the Environment Agency, puts about 85 percent of the groundwater taken in Kent as coming from the chalk and about 10 percent from the Greensand. The Weald clay, the Gault and the London clay hold almost none, and they drain slowly.

That shapes the work. On the clay, around Smarden and Headcorn, drainage fields struggle and many older homes have a sealed cesspit. On the chalk, around Challock, a field can work, but water runs down through the chalk quickly, and the same guidance notes that many rural areas with no mains drainage sit inside the protection zones around drinking water sources. It also records widespread nitrogen pollution of groundwater across Kent, with sewage discharges thought to be a significant part of it, which is why a tank that leaks or a field that has failed matters here.

In the south, Romney Marsh, Walland Marsh and Dungeness sit inside the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest, around New Romney, where the protected sites and the water table rule out most discharges. Our guide to the General Binding Rules explains which rules apply where.
