Working in New Romney

High water table across the Marsh means groundwater can get into a cracked tank and fill it with clean water.
Cesspits here often sit at the shorter end of the usual four to eight weeks, because groundwater can find its way into an older tank.
Coastal wind and salt take their toll on covers and fittings, so we check them every visit.
New Romney sits in the Folkestone and Hythe district, and this stretch of coast falls inside the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay designations.
That matters when you are replacing rather than emptying, because a new discharge to ground within 50 metres of those designations, or to a ditch or watercourse within 500 metres, cannot use the General Binding Rules, which is part of why so much of this coast runs on sealed cesspools.
