Three rivers, the levels and a protected bay
Rye's old town stands on a rocky outcrop where three rivers meet, the Rother, the Brede and the Tillingham, and Rother District Council's appraisal of the town notes that much of the land around it lies in the tidal floodplain. The levels to the east, out towards East Guldeford, are mapped as tidal clay and silt in the Environment Agency's highest flood zone. On ground like that, a drainage field has little room above the water table for much of the year, which is why so many properties around the town run a sealed cesspool or a treatment plant.
The levels and the coast also sit inside the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest, which Natural England puts at 9,090 hectares, and its ditches are described as slow moving and rich in nutrients. The international wetland record for the same area lists household sewage among the things affecting it. A new discharge in or near those sites cannot rely on the General Binding Rules, and installing a septic tank in Rye explains what that leaves.
